5.0 out of 5 stars Nuances of Ownership, June 21, 2011

In short, it's a great bag: Lots of pockets, great organization, great hydration bladder, excellent materials all around and quality construction. If you were to stop reading now and buy it you would not be disappointed.

Rather than a really thorough review (you can just read several of the others out there, there are many good ones), I thought I would list a few things that I learned about the bag after I have used it for several weeks. Nuances, if you will.

A couple of notes about me, I am a male, about 6' 1" tall, and 230 lbs. Most of my extra weight is on my stomach resulting in a small "beer belly". I purchased the M/L size and it works great.

1: The waist strap that secures the load of the pack sits below my waist, which works really well. It adjusts easily from either side, and loosens quickly for removal. I have tried other packs where the belt sits on top of my stomach and looks ridiculous.

2: One reviewer complained that the... Read more

5.0 out of 5 stars Best day pack I've owned., November 8, 2010

This is no book bag, this a serious, technical, hydration pack. Now that I've taken this on a few hikes, one in 80+ heat, I can say this pack delivers on Osprey's promises.

Primarily a hydration pack, the Manta has an innovative hydration bladder. The 3-liter bladder has both a spine on one side, and a stiff, curved panel on the side against your back. This makes inserting a full bladder into the Manta simpler than any pack I've ever used (I've gone through my share over 25+ years of hiking). The mouthpiece and the chest-strap buckle have strong (rare earth?) magnets to keep the mouthpiece from flopping around. A nice touch. Even with three liters the bladder doesn't cut into the main compartment's capacity much.

I'd read around the web that the pack didn't seem as large as advertised, but there is a large main compartment, a sunglasses pouch, an organization pouch, with a key fob, and slots for pens, wallet, GPS etc., two exterior sleeves great for maps, guides,... Read more

I just received the Osprey Manta 30. Upon opening the package the first thing I saw was a leaflet with Osprey's unconditional warranty..they will fix any damage or defect, for any reason, for any of their products EVER made. Impressive..

After unboxing and messing with it I am very impressed with the build quality, from the tightness of the zippers down to all the tie down points included. The hydration pack is equally impressive - seems to be very durable, and the rigid spine on it provides some extra support.

As I write this review I'm sitting here with the pack on. I have a full size chemistry book (approx. 10lb), a 15" laptop and a full 3 liters of water in it. The weight distribution is very good; I can tell I have a pack on, but it doesn't dig in to my back anywhere and is pretty comfortable.

I haven't taken this outdoors yet, but will be doing some hiking/rock climbing this weekend. I'll post a follow-up review to let... Read more
