It is a bit large for my second grader who just turned 7, but not so overwhelming that she can't handle it. It is probably the standard size for an adult back pack.The mesh is thick and sturdy--unlike others we bought and lasted less than a year before wearing out on the bottom, and it is roomy for books and folders. It has a front pocket in the same mesh material. but it also has a small inside pocket in a solid canvas sort of material that is handy for small items, or pointy pencils that could hurt someone poking out of the mesh pocket. The straps have plenty of padding for comfort when carrying a full load. I love Jansport--still have a back pack of theirs that I carried in college (15 years ago) and it is still in perfect condition.
